Homework: |
5th Grade Math Groups / 5th Grade Digits Groups - Students will have homework no more than 4 nights a week, not including some occasional nine-week projects. I post a description of what the homework will be for the week on my homework link. Homework is graded for each standard and included as a grade in iNow as part of the average for each standard. Students will have practice work to complete in class and it may become additional homework if they are not using their class time accordingly.
Most homework is digital, but written work must be included in their math notebook for Mr. Hunt to see "the process". We will review the process of taking notes and showing homework in their notebooks over the first couple of weeks. When an assignment is not turned in on time or the notebook paper is not turned in on time, students receive 10 points off of their graded average for that assignment. |
Grading / Standard Based Report Cards: |
For the 2017-2018 school year, students will travel to all classes with their homeroom. Within each math class, students will be placed into groups for differentiated small group instruction, peer work, classwork, homework, mastery assessment, and pacing. All students will receive whole group instruction on foundational 5th grade standards with additional enrichment using 6th grade standards. See below for more details.
5th Grade Math Groups (Green Groups)- Students will use 5th Grade EnVision Math and other resources for small group, independent practice, and homework. Graded assignments each nine-weeks are averaged based on Huntsville City School's weighted percentages. Operations and Algebraic Thinking 15% Number and Operations in Base Ten 20% Measurement & Data 20% Geometry 15% Number & Operations Fractions 30% Final averages will be reflected as a proficiency level on report cards. Parents will find a "4, 3, 2, or 1" reflecting proficiency on the standards taught that nine-weeks. However, individual standards are attached to all assignments and parents can access the detailed year-to-date standards report on iNow to see what specific standard(s) their child needs additional help with. Information about Huntsville City School's standards-based grading in elementary can be found by Clicking Here. 5th Grade Math Pacing Guide This is the pacing guide that these students will follow. 5th Grade Digits Groups (Yellow Groups) - Students will use 6th Grade Digits in addition to 5th Grade Envision Math and other resources for small group, independent practice, and homework. Students will have blended instruction using both 5th and 6th grade standards. For grading purposes, students are registered for "6th Grade Math" and will be graded according to Middle School grading practices using both the 5th/6th grade standards in iNow. The pacing guide for these students is posted below. They are expected to master 5th grade standards at a faster pace in addition to 6th grade standards. 5th Grade students across Huntsville City School's do this for math acceleration. Graded assignments each nine-weeks are averaged based on Huntsville City School's weighted percentages. They are: Summative Grades (Tests, Projects) 60% In class assignments (Daily Assignments/Homework) 40% Final averages will be reflected as numerical value between 0 - 100. Students still take the 5th grade end of year test required by the state. 5th Grade Digits Pacing Guide This is the blended pacing guide that Digits groups will follow. (5th / 6th) |
Websites:
|
Edmodo - Students will use create an Edmodo account if they don't already have one to access projects, notes, and occasional homework quizzes if noted on homework page. I recommend that parents require their students to give them their password and parents check updates on student accounts rather than make a parent account. I can access student passwords also. I also use Edmodo in the event that I'm absent from school. Students will have assignments posted and videos to watch for instructional purposes.
**** I will post examples of problems, notes from class, pictures of anchor charts, student examples, and more on Edmodo throughout the year that they can use in addition to their notebook. Their notebook will go home with them daily as a guide for homework. They will also have a classwork notebook that will be kept in class for daily practice and assignments IXL - Independent learning website that encourages practice and engagement. Students can work on the grade level game board and unlock "treasures" through challenges or practice current skills being discovered in the classroom. I use IXL in a number of ways:
Prodigy - Prodigy is an online math game that students really enjoy! For the most part, it is used independently by students as a resource when all their work is completed. I do assign skills on it it though that they can work on within the game and check their progress regularly. Occasionally, I will use Prodigy for a graded assignment if needed. This is another great resource for remediation and enrichment. Students can use it at home too! ScootPad - ScootPad is another independent learning site used for review and enrichment. It is a resource they may use independently when other work is completed. Symbaloo - This is like an online desktop that has links to resources and websites that I provide to students. It includes math games and other math websites as well as links to our school's digital libraries for reading if work is completed. It also has links to resources that I use in class for quick access by students. Websites like Quizziz , Socrative, NearPod, Padlet, Kahoot, and more. |
